My technology I chose was the typewriter for the sole purpose that it was always an interesting invention to me, and how it shaped future computers. It is crazy to me that we still use the same keyboard layout (QWERTY) which was created in 1874. In 1714 the first patent was made for the typewriter but it was not until 1868 that the second patent was made. In 1867 the first practical typewriter was created even though the first patent did not come out until 1868. The man who made the first typewriter was named Christopher Latham Sholes. It was reinvented over a dozen times. The typewriter was not common in offices until the late 1880's. In 1872 Thomas A. Edison made the printing wheel which made typewrites electrical. The typewriter was often only used by professional writers and business in private homes. It quickly became a tool for all writing besides handwritten letters. It had a huge impact on the world and future inventions. It heavily accelerated social change and opened up more jobs for females in an office for the first time like ever. This cause businesses to run smoother and overall the economy to thrive in power as a whole. The typewriter really had no long term negative effects, when nit first came out however the negative effects were just the invention alone being expensive, complicated and heavy. If I were to make a pros and cons list from today there would be no cons on it. It shaped the future for many other inventions. A typist was someone who could use a typewriter back then and could type anywhere from 100-150 words per minute. A typewriter is described as "an artificial machine for the impressing or transcribing of letters singly or progressively one after another." It was in use in almost every home and office up till the late 1980's until modern day computers were released in the 1980's. I thought it was cool that the keyboard for a typewriter was designed based off of piano keys. The first typewriter made was called the "Sholes and Gidden."

The typewriter changed the world forever, it made it easier to create documents by reducing the time and expenses on all documents. This encouraged the spread of different kinds of management that we have never seen before at that time and it allowed communication to be easier and faster between people or businesses. It opened up countless jobs and changed a lot of peoples lives. It also helped manufacturers business offices grow in sequence with quicker transportation networks. Till this day some people use typewriters or have them as an art piece, it has a few benefits to use, such as, you are less distracted when using one and you have to do better research prior to writing. We know now that modern day computers have replaced them but I still think typewriters are a really cool invention that changed the world forever. I do believe it is one of the top inventions ever created and probably had one of the biggest impacts on society.

 Eight Values of Free Expression

The eight values of free expression are the theories that describe to us why our freedom of expression is so important to us as Americans. The eight values are laid out as being; Marketplace of Ideas, Participation in Self-Government, Stable Change, Individual Self-Fulfillment, Check on Government Power, Promote Tolerance, Promote Innovation, and Protect Dissent.

In my opinion I believe the most important one is "Check on Government Power" and I believe this for several reasons. One reason is that this makes it so one branch of government cannot abuse their power. Freedom of press gives citizens the right to learn about all the abuses of power. Besides that reason I believe the most important reason that this is the most important value of free expression is because this makes it so that we can never be ran by a dictator or a radical leader. Checks and Balances are a huge reason that we have been the strongest country for decades on end. It gives the people power to never have a leader or a party abuse their powers and keeps everything in check.

The one I see the most nowadays almost everyday is "Marketplace of Ideas." This one I believe I see a little too much on all social media platforms especially Instagram and Twitter. There has been censorship on almost every Covid-19 post I see that talks about how you should not have to get a vaccine or that the death tolls are not as bad as flu and so on. This value I enjoyed learning about especially because it states "The marketplace of ideas refers to the belief that the test of the truth or acceptance of ideas depends on their competition with one another and not on the opinion of a censor, whether one provided by the government or by some other authority."This to me speaks large volume because of how everything with fake news and the media lately and how much in the last year I have hated almost every news and social media platform.

"Promoting Tolerance" is the one that is most personal to me for a few reasons and I think it should be for most people as well. People in the last few years on social media have taken "cancel culture" way too far in my opinion and in my own words I would say the world has became too soft because of how "close" everyone thinks they are with each other because of social media. Nowadays you cannot have opposite opinions without being attacked online or in person. We have the God given right to have our own opinions and share them however we want if it is not violent. You would think the world was ending if you saw certain celebrities Instagram posts and the comments because they have a different view than half the population.

During our lecture in class and based off the Supreme Court Video I learned a lot of valuable information that I definitely should have knew before watching the video but did not. The one one fact I found that was very interesting to me is that every case they look at has the same point of view no matter what kind of case it is. Not one case is more important than the other even if it is the worst case they have ever heard of. I like this idea because it gives everyone fair trials no matter who they are and in my head I believe this is the best way to do it and am shocked that in todays world that is still the rule. I did learn however that they shuffled through five and ten justices before finally deciding on nine. I always thought this was a set number since the Supreme Court was created. I believe the most important take away from the video I watched was the fact that William Howard Taft was chief justice and president at the same time which I thought was the most important takeaway because of how crazy that is to me. The fact I did not know that and that might be one of the craziest things in history to happen. Until the last few days I never realized how the Supreme Court only has around 100 cases a year that they accept and they will get 100 cases a week but not take a high percent of them.

Media Law and Literacy

 October 29th, 2021

1st Source is Fox News

This is probably my third or fourth favorite news source, I am a big fan of it because it always shows the bigger picture on things. I am not a political news person but it definitely has other sides to things that I like to learn about. It does not just talk about Covid-19 like a lot of news stations have been doing for the past year or so. Fox News is the thing I used to wake up to since about 3rd grade and still to this day you will see me with Fox News on the television almost everyday. Also a side note is that I think their news-tellers have quite the senses of humor.

2nd Source is New York Post

I like the New York Post only for a few reasons; One reason is that if I look something up on Google this is usually one of the first few links at the top and I feel like it is a reliable source to find information. It has celebrity news which I am not a big fan of and also it has political news and business news.

I do however sometimes enjoy the celebrity news when it happens to be of a celebrity that I like to know about. I am not one of those girls with the Kardashian love that need to know every second about their life but I do like to know the major things of a few celebrities lives.

3rd Source is Wall Street Journal

This is probably my most favorite news source because it is focused on mainly business, and for me since I am big into stocks and day trading this is where I am hours on end to find news on business that has just came out. It is great for even just keeping up with the world of business so you know what is happening around the world and if you get into a conversation with a business man that you probably would want to know about quite a few things going on. It has also been around since I believe the 1880's and is still updated daily and is based out of New York. It is a great source of valuable information that everyone should have an idea about.
The post I put under this text is based on 9/11 and this is just an example of the kind of work they do daily.

4th Source is Jerry News

This is the only news source on Instagram I really actually enjoy and will look through its posts. It has hourly updates about all the big news around the world. It is a small news company with only about 1.2 Million followers. Although it is small and unknown it is really easy to click on their page on Instagram and find a lot of information about the world in a few posts. It takes both sides of the political world and even has sports news and all other types of news. It is by far my favorite regular news source on social media because I am not a big Instagram person and this just so happens to be the only news source I follow.

My last source number 5 is ESPN

This is by far my favorite news source for the life of all sports, It updates me on my phone every score of every game. When something in the sports world happens I get a notification straight to my phone. My favorite team is the Sixers for the NBA. If they trade a player I will know in about two minutes of that trade, the people who run ESPN are hilarious, they are awesome to watch, and the fact news gets sent straight to my phone with scores is awesome. The only time I do not like the notifications is during big games when my TV is behind and I get a whole spoiler sent to my phone and the game is ruined for me.

This picture below is just to show the kind of news they post or have on television daily. Stephen A. Smith is quite the character and has the most outlandish views but is still great to use.
